Four Reasons Why Bee, Wasp and Hornet Removal Should be Left to the Experts

Just like any other animal, bees, wasps and hornets should be protected. Let’s not forget that bees are particularly important for many aspects of life, and should be crowned as the only species to produce food consumed by humans. However, having any type of pest surrounding your home can be a real worry or danger. When faced with such a problem, although dangerous, it can be tempting to try and tackle the nest yourself. Doing so could be putting yourself in a lot more danger than you realise, so here are four reasons why you should leave pest removal to the experts.

Knowledge

It’s very unlikely that you have expert knowledge of bees, wasps and hornets. If you can’t tell your honeybees from you bumblebees then you’re probably not the right person for the job. With an estimated 250 different species in the UK, and 20,000 worldwide, being able to identify what kind you’re dealing with is the most important factor. Each breed has a particular behaviour pattern and reacts differently when disturbed. In order to prevent yourself from any harm,it’s always best to hire a professional who will have the correct knowledge to complete the job safely. Once the hive or nest is removed it’s imperative that you stop it from returning. Experts will be able to use the correct precautions to ensure that you aren't revisited by the swarm.

Allergies

One of the worst things to experience is getting stung by bees, wasps or hornets. Naturally, when bees feel threatened they act aggressively towards the threat: making them more likely to sting. When a stinger releases venom into your skin this causes swelling, and in severe cases anaphylaxis. In that case your body will go into shock and emergency medical assistance is required as soon as possible. Many people don’t know they have a bee or wasp allergy, so attempting to remove them puts yourself and those around you in a potentially fatal situation.

Harm

Alongside the danger that removing hives and nests can cause for your own well-being, you could also be harming the creatures. Any kind of interaction with animals should be properly risk assessed to reduce harm. Since the population of bees is currently at a dangerously low level, eradicating the hive completely may not be the best option. When possible, bees should be protected to combat their extinction, continue pollination and ensure they can repopulate. Additionally, ignoring the problem could cause further destruction to your property resulting in more costs.

Equipment

Poking a wasps nest and running for your life is not the right way to go about removing them. Nests can appear in awkward places like chimneys or in attics, so it’s essential that someone with experience and the correct equipment is at hand. If your chimney serves a real fire, this can be a fire hazard if the wax and honey melts. Any kind of nest is usually set up in high places, so a cherry picker or scaffolding may be required. The good news is that professional services will have access to all of this equipment.
