How to Revive Tired Bees
During the summer, all that time spent collecting pollen and making honey can be tiring for bees, so it’s not uncommon to see tired looking bees in your home or garden. In 2007 it was announced that honey bees were dangerously close to extinction, but, there are a number of things that we can do to help.
This blog will explain what you can do if you see a tired bee around your home or garden.
According to the RSPB, the best way to revive exhausted bees is to make a sugar and water solution in an eggcup or small container among flowers. This will give bees a well-deserved energy boost so they can continue their work. Don’t be tempted to offer bees a spoonful of honey, as it’s likely that the honey that you have has been imported as is not suitable for British bees. Furthermore, it will also contain artificial ingredients and diet sweeteners that can badly affect the bee’s health.
However, sugar-water should not be left out for bees when they don’t need it. This is because the easy accessibility of sugar water may discourage them from foraging, and instead, collect sugar-water.
If you find a bee that is barely moving or has damage to its body, it’s probably best to let nature take its course. But, sometimes these creatures can surprise us, if you want to help then place some sugar water nearby and this may be able to provide a small boost to allow it to return to the hive. It’s also important to remember that bees should not be kept as pets - although it can be tempting when a bee looks in trouble. Offering a sugar-water solution or carefully transporting the bee close to flowers is the most that you should do.
Apart from creating honey, honey bees have the important job of pollination - this is the process of flowering plant reproduction. A large majority of flowers, fruits and vegetables all rely on bees to transfer pollen so we can have fresh food right on our doorstep or to be used on a commercial level.
