How to Utilise Your Garden in the Winter
Summer has passed and autumn is upon us, which means crunchy leaves, cold nights and a whole new range of plants coming into bloom. However, just because the weather changed, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy your garden - who knows, you may find the autumn becomes your favourite time of the year.
Read on, for some great suggestions on how you can use your garden in the winter.
Towards the end of the year there are still many fun occasions that you can utilise your garden for. Halloween, bonfire night, Christmas festivities and New Year, to name a few, are the perfect excuse to host a party. If you already have a snug or seating area in your garden, you can make this autumn and winter friendly by adding fairy lights, a chiminea and of course lots of blankets. Why not invite your friends and family over for an evening of fun including toasting marshmallows or apple bobbing in your garden?
Summer isn’t the only time you should get planting, in fact, your outdoor vegetable patch and your greenhouse can be used all year round. Whether you're harvesting crops that you planted earlier in the year or you want to sow something new, as long as you have a good cover and tend to your seeds, you’ll be fine. Kale, lettuce and carrots are just a few vegetables that can survive through winter.
For many creatures, winter is a time for hibernation and stocking up on food. Your garden may be the perfect resting place, so it’s a good idea to keep your bird feeders full, ensure bird baths and ponds do not freeze over completely and be careful around grass piles as this is a common place for animals to hide.
