Forest walk

With summer nearly over, it’s time to prepare yourself for autumn, a time of changing colours, crunchy leaves and the perfect season for relaxed walks with a flask of hot tea. We know it’s tempting to stay cuddled up indoors, but nature still has a lot to offer, so make the effort to get outdoors.

For a little inspiration, read on for our top autumn activities.

Forest walk

Get out and explore your local forest or arboretum, here you can see everything that autumn has to offer - view the changing leaves, autumn flowers and wonderful wildlife. Why not visit Bute Park & Arboretum in Cardiff or go a little further afield and take a walk around the amazing Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire. This is an activity that is suitable for all ages, children will love running through the forest in their wellies and learning about the environment around them, while couples can take in the scenic views as they stroll with a hot drink in hand.

Get crafty

While you’re out and about, make the most of fallen leaves, conkers and pine cones by collecting them to be used in a crafty project, and children can get involved too. Kids can collect these items and get started on an arty piece for the home, or while you’re out, have a go at tree rubbing. Simply place a piece of paper over tree bark or on top of a leaf and use a crayon to colour over it and reveal the markings. If you want something for your home, dried plants can be used to create your own potpourri, giving your home that autumn feel.

Pick seasonal fruit and veg

What’s better snuggling up on an autumn evening with a hot bowl of vegetable soup or a delicious slice of homemade apple pie? If you’ve got a vegetable patch make sure you’ve planted your seasonal veg ready for harvest, and you’ll be fully stocked to cook some tasty autumn meals. Alternatively, visit your local farm, orchard or greengrocers for some freshly grown produce. This is likely to be tastier and freshers that supermarket bought items, ensuring your tasty treats and packed full of flavour.
