Not many people are even aware that hornets are a type of wasp. Others often just have trouble distinguishing them from other wasps.

The truth is, hornets are actually very different from other wasp types. Not only are they larger in size, but they also come in twenty different types of subspecies. Although hornets are most commonly found in Asia, you can also find many types in Europe and North America.

Read on for 6 interesting hornet related facts you should know:

1. Hornets come from the vespidae family, but are larger than wasps

Although hornets come from the same family, the primary difference to help you distinguish between wasps and hornets is their size. Hornet are usually about an inch larger than wasps.

2. Hornets can come in many different colours

While wasps are usually black and yellow, you can spot a hornet of any number of colours.

3. Their sting can carry five times the poison of wasp sting

They’re also a little scarier than ordinary wasps as hornets to attack in a large group.

4. Hornets can be shy

While many people are scared of hornets, they’re not actually an aggressive insect. They usually choose to live in an undisturbed area and don’t attack unless they think their home is being attacked.

5. They usually choose to nest in high places

Hornets tend to prefer roofs and treetops to nest above ground, as it’s more secure and private. Those that choose to nest in the ground will find abandoned or undisturbed burrows and fields.

6. The hornet sting can be lethal

Many people are wary of hornets for this reason. Their sting can be venomous and potentially fatal for humans, due to the amount of poison they can carry. However, hornet stings are rare as the insects tend to shy away from people.
