It’s important to have a balanced and varied diet, with all food groups eaten in moderation. But, if you’d like to indulge a little less, why not make some healthy swaps and use honey as a natural alternative to get that sugar fix. Of course, you should also have fun when cooking, by trying new recipes and adding new ingredients - honey being one of them.

To help inspire you, this blog will explain some tasty ways that you can incorporate honey into your meals.

Natural sweetener

If you’re an avid drinker of herbal and fruit teas, why not swap that extra spoonful of sugar for a teaspoon of honey? However, don’t add honey when the water is boiling as this will destroy its beneficial properties, instead wait for your tea to cool a little before adding it in. Another way honey can be used as a sweetener is on porridge and in yoghurt. Start the day with a bowl of wholesome oats, topped with fruit and a drizzle of honey - this is a great alternative to standard cereals and will give you that boost you need in the morning.

Marinade

Why not try something different than the usual seasons used for meat? You might not think it, but a variety of meats work very well with a honey-based sauce or seasoning - if you enjoy stir fry for example, why not create your own ‘sweet and sour’ style sauce for the perfect blend of savoury and sweet. Honey also works as a lovely glaze for chicken, a quick internet search will provide you with a range of quick and delicious recipes that you can follow.

Salad dressing

If you’re looking for a way of spicing up your salads, add a tasty salad dressing to add some flavour - plus, a dry salad is not the best. Make your own honey and mustard dressing to accompany your salad, whether your having it as a side dish or dish for lunch.
