Top tips for avoiding bee and wasp stings this summer
As the weather slowly starts getting warmer and the nights become longer, it’s finally time to shake the dust off your barbeque and find the summer clothes you pushed to the back of your wardrobe. Summer is everyone’s favourite time of year - and it’s not difficult to see why! However, we’re not the only ones who enjoy the warmer weather. This is the time of year when bees and wasps start coming out in droves to build their nests and collect pollen, much to the dismay of those enjoying picnics and country walks.
As experts in wasp, bee and hornet control, we at Mr Wasp have put together our top tips for avoiding those nasty stings and enjoying the sunshine this summer. Read on for more information:
It may sound obvious, but it’s surprising how many people have been stung after letting their curiosity get the better of them and venturing too close to a bee or wasp nest. Make sure you keep your distance and don’t linger - any bees or wasps flying back to the nest may be threatened by your presence and sting you in defence. If one stings you, it’s likely others will sense their distress and also rush to attack, so it’s better to stay away from anywhere there may be large populations of the insects.
If a bee or wasp lands on you, your first instinct may be to flap your arms about and run away. However, this is likely to simply aggravate them more and may cause them to sting you in panic. Instead, try to stay calm and don’t disturb them - they’ll soon lose interest and fly away.
As bees and wasps both eat nectar, sweet fragrances such as floral perfumes and scented moisturisers are likely to attract them in the hope they’ll find food. If you know you’re going to be sat outside during the warmest hours of the day (when bees and wasps are the most active), avoid wearing any scents that could tickle a bee’s tastebuds. Instead, stock up on some insect repellent.
There’s nothing worse than trying to enjoy a meal and finding yourself at the centre of a bee’s or wasp’s attention, or spotting an insect crawling all over your freshly barbequed burger. After all, if you disturb its snack, you may find yourself at the receiving end of its sting. To avoid the advances of anything that might sting you, try to keep all fruit, meat and sugary drinks covered up where possible and, once finished, make sure you dispose of all leftovers immediately.
While there are many tips and tricks for avoiding bee and wasp stings, it can prove slightly more challenging if you find a whole colony in your home or business premises. In this case, you’ll need to hire the experts to dispose of it quickly, safely and with minimal disruption to your day.
