If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, encouraging your children to play outside is great for learning about nature and staying fit. However, it’s also important to keep them safe so they can continue their adventures without harm and have fun!

Here are some top tips for keeping your children safe outdoors.

Never leave small children unattended

Children love exploring outside and discovering new things, but it only takes a few seconds for an accident to occur. Never leave small toddlers by themselves and keep an eye on older children too. Sit outside with them and make the most of the garden too!

Check for hazards

Make sure you check for hazards before your child goes out to play such as gardening tools, sharp objects, fallen fruit or wasps nests. If you haven’t been in the garden in a while, checking everything over will ensure that the area is safe but if hazards are present remove them promptly or bring your child indoors until it’s sorted.

Inspect your boundaries

Little ones are great at squeezing through small gaps, so to eliminate the danger it’s worth looking around your garden for broken fence panels and damage. This is particularly important if your garden backs on to a public path or site.

Teach them about the outdoors

Depending on the age of your children, teaching them about the outdoors will help them spot dangers. For example, point out stinging nettles and explain the danger or explain how important bees are however not to touch them as they can sting. Don’t overwhelm them with information but don’t be afraid to point out dangers and explain how they can stay safe.
