Summer is the time for flowers to bloom and insects to fly around your gardens. Bees are one creature you will seem more of and while they are usually safe to be around, there is always a risk of being stung. For most people, this will simply hurt for a few hours or leave a small mark on your skin, however, if you are allergic to bees you may have a potentially life-threatening reaction.

You probably won’t know that you’re allergic that you are stung. In this blog, we explain some of the top indicators that you are allergic to bees and need medical assistance.

What are the signs of a bee allergy?

When you are allergic to a bee sting it’s the venom that you’re allergic to. Honey bees can be particularly problematic as they have a stinger that can get stuck in the skin and continue to pump out venom into the wound!

If you are stung by a bee and experience the following symptoms or signs of anaphylactic shock you must call 999 immediately:

Itching or hives around the sting and all over your body

Swelling of the face, mouth and tongue - this can result in serious difficulty breathing so never ignore it!

Trouble breathing and taking in air

Feeling lightheaded or dizzy

Sickness or diarrhoea

What is a regular bee sting like?

Everyone reacts to stings differently, however, it is totally normal to experience minor redness, itching and swelling around the sting. If you feel otherwise okay, follow these steps but keep an eye on the sting and your condition:

Wrap ice cubes or a bag of ice in a towel (never directly on the sting) to cool the area

Raise the area of the sting to reduce swelling

Take an antihistamine and use a hydrocortisone cream to ease swelling and itching
