How to Keep Safe in the Summer
Summer is a time have fun, enjoy the warmer weather and get that barbeque sizzling, but while there’s nothing better than being outdoors you also need to stay safe. We all know how unpredictable British weather can be, so when it does brighten up it’s easy to forget about safety precaution and simply rush outside instead.
To keep you safe all summer, this blog will explain our top tips.
Even when the sun isn’t directly beaming down on you, humid weather and shady areas can still increase cause your body to overheat. Heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke, are serious so never underestimate the importance of staying hydrated. As well as all those sugary and alcoholic drinks we like to indulge in, make sure you’re also consuming the right about of water - invest in a reusable chilled bottle which you can refill when you’re out and about.
Many people forget about applying suncream unless they’re abroad, but even in the UK the sun can affect your skin by drying it out, burning it and making you more at risk to more serious skin problems later down the line. It’s worth getting in the habit of using a facial cream that contains SPF throughout the year and increasing this to a proper suncream lotion during hot weather. When you’re outside, you often don’t realise how much your body is being affected by the sun, however, once you return indoors if you haven’t taken precautions you’ll soon not red and sore areas on your skin.
Be careful of insect stings
When out in your garden be aware of insects such as bees and wasps that could be around. Check the area before you sit down, look inside glasses and can before taking a sip and be careful if you’re walking around barefoot. If you do get stung, apply an icepack to the area as this will reduce swelling and redness, but make sure you keep an eye on the sting and watch out for severe symptoms of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the throat, vomiting, weakness and any sign of infection - don’t be afraid to call your GP or 911 if you’re concerned.
Be sensible when you’re dressing for warm weather. Don’t overdo it with layers, instead, wear lightweight clothing that gives you room to breathe and make sure any exposed areas of skin are protected with suncream. It’s also a good idea to invest in a cap that will keep your face shaded and stop your scalp from burning.
