How to Teach Your Children About Nature
Wildlife and nature are all around us, in our back gardens, local parks, zoos and even on the way to school, in fact, you can’t avoid it. For children, nature is a fascinating thing that should be explored so they can learn about the world around them and the importance of conserving natural habitats and the creatures in them.
Read on, for some fun and useful ways that you can teach your children about nature.
One way that you can get your little ones interested in nature, is to start working on your own garden. Head down to your local garden centre and bring your children along, they’ll enjoy helping you choose which plants to buy and they can pick something special out for themselves. Having their own little project will teach them about every aspect of growing plants, what they need to survive and even if your plants don’t thrive as expected, this will show them just how fragile nature is. Grow a variety of plants, flowers and veg so your children can see the diversity of nature, comparing textures, colours, heights and growth rates.
Explore your local environment
Make a conscious effort to point out nature when you’re out and about, from daisies in the park to hundred-year-old trees, the more you get your children interested, the more questions they will ask. You could also research projects, sanctuaries and zoos in your local area, as many of these will have hands-on activities and workshops that your child can get involved in. This is a great way of learning about the wildlife you don’t usually find in your garden and the perfect day out for all the family.
Even on holiday, you can still make it nature-friendly by taking a trip to the coast. If you haven't seen already, the British coastline is full of beautiful natural landmarks, beaches and paths for you to discover. Why not take a lot at creatures living in rock pools or the shells and seaweed that have washed up ashore? With plenty to do, your children won't want to come home!
