Jiminy Cricket

In children’s films and books, it’s a common theme that characters are portrayed as animals or insects, but nevertheless, they're still highly lovable. . Wise, funny and memorable, these characters have brightened up many childhoods, and stayed as firm favourites right through our adult lives.

For a nostalgic look at some of our favourites, carry on reading.

Charlotte the spider - Charlotte’s Web

Originally written by E.B White in 1952, Charlotte’s Web is a children’s novel that tackles some very adult issues. The plot follows Wilbur, a pig living on Mr Arable’s farm and his friendship with a barn spider called Charlotte. As Wilbur finds himself in danger of slaughter, Charlotte writes the message ‘some pig’ across her web, as a way of persuading the farmer to let the pig live. Throughout the book, Charlotte inspires everyone with her beautiful words, that she articulates across her web. She is intelligent, skilled and honest, her friendship with Wilbur is one of the most pure examples found in children’s literature.

Jiminy Cricket - Pinocchio

First appearing in the 1940's Disney animation, Jiminy Cricket was appointed as Pinocchio's conscience. He’s there to help Pinocchio see right from wrong and make the best choices, sticking by his side and offering his advice whether Pinocchio likes it or not. In his infamous top hat and tails, Jiminy Cricket is one of Disney’s greatest insects.

Absolem the caterpillar - Alice in Wonderland

In a world where anything is possible, Alice in Wonderland is a classic novel enjoyed by children and adults alike. Absolem the caterpillar or the blue caterpillar, is rather short with Alice when they first meet, however it shouldn’t be ignored that he is the first characters that makes an effort to guide Alice. His persistent questions are there to highlight Alice’s confusion, but by offering her the size-altering mushroom he ultimately shows her the change isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
