Everyone knows the primary function of a bee. To make honey. But did you know a single bee only produces about one tablespoon of honey in its entire lifetime? This is why they work in massive hives, as individually they don’t get much done!

But producing honey isn’t the only thing a bee does, so here are four different products a bee can supply and their uses.

Bee Venom Therapy

Apitherapy is using bees or products from bees for medicinal use. There is a specific therapy that involves bee venom where a patient can receive multiple stings in a session and then has ice applied to reduce the pain and numb the skin. This therapy works because the bee stings cause inflammation, which can trigger an anti-inflammatory response from the immune system which benefits sufferers from conditions such as MS. There is no solid research behind the therapy but it is still a popular alternative medicine treatment.

Royal Jelly

Royal jelly is produced in the mouth glands of young bees and fed to the queen bee to aid with their nutrition and development. Studies have found that royal jelly is likely to enhance collagen production, so is often sold in skincare products. It also helps relieve the symptoms of menopause and helps with diabetes management. Royal jelly is dangerous to ingest in high doses.

Propolis

Propolis is a substance that is used in the hive to seal holes and cracks. Propolis is usually not available in its pure form but mixed into tinctures for medical purposes. It is commonly used to treat various diseases due to being a great antiseptic, antioxidant, antifungal and anti-inflammatory. This can include improving blood sugar control in diabetics, helping cold sores heal faster and helping reduce swelling. Propolis can cause allergic reactions if you’re allergic to other bee products.

Bee Bread

Bee bread is a mixture of plant pollen and honey that is described as edible grade pollen. Athletes eat bee bread while training as it can help boost performance, increase oxygen intake, strengthen immune systems and recover quicker after training. It also has a range of health benefits such as being a natural source of vitamins, essential minerals & antioxidants and supporting gut, liver & cardiovascular health.
