The Do’s and Don'ts of Preventing Bee, Wasp and Hornet Stings
Although bees, wasps and hornets hold a pivotal role in our local ecosystem by pollinating flowers and helping plants to develop and produce food, this does not mean that we should be wary of their stings and the implications this can cause. Stings produce mild reactions such as irritation and itching, but they can also cause more serious health risks such as breathing difficulty, dizziness and sudden drop in blood pressure. As a result, it’s important to know the do’s and don'ts of preventing bee, wasp and hornet stings.
From using a bee nest removal company to how you behave outdoors, take a look at Mr Wasp’s guide to preventing stings.
Do This:
● Protect Feet Outdoors - When you’re outside, it is advisable that you or your children don’t walk barefoot on lawns because you never know where a bee, wasp or hornet could be foraging. In some instances, bees and wasps nest in the ground so if they are stood on, they will almost certainly sting.
● Leave Nests Alone - Tampering with a nest can only aggravate the insects that are inside it, meaning they will kick into self-defence mode and inevitably sting back. If there is a nest in your living space, then it is best to enlist the help of a wasp nest removal company to extract the nest safely and efficiently.
● Keep your Face and Hands Clean - Keeping your face and hands clean is particularly important when you’re outside with children. These insects are attracted to sweet food and drinks, so making sure that your face and hands are clean will minimise the risk of a wasp sting. It is perhaps best practice to carry baby wipes around with you.
Don’t Do This:
● Panic - We’ve all been there when a wasp is entering your personal space and causing disruption. Although it might be against your personal instinct, the best thing to do in this situation is to remain calm. If you panic and start waving your arms around, then this is likely to irritate the wasp and encourage them to sting.
● Sit in Places Close to Wasps - If you’re out for a picnic, then it is best to avoid sitting in areas where wasps, bees and hornets are likely to gather. For instance, avoid sitting next to bins and flowering shrubs, as this is where they are most likely to congregate.
