Although summer months are great for garden and barbeque parties, the presence of wasps and their ability to sting can sometimes put a dampener on things. Especially when there is a lot of food around, wasps can invite themselves into the party and be unwelcomed guest. For some of us, our natural reaction is to try and get rid of wasps by trying to palm them away. However because wasps are equipped with stingers for self-defence, this can usually increase the chances of a sting. Wasps stinger contains venom which is transmitted to humans during the sting. As a result, this can cause pain and irritation.

Luckily, there are ways for you to treat a wasp sting. Take a look at Mr Wasp’s guide to treating a wasp sting!

Mild Reaction

If your reaction to the wasp sting is mild, then there are ways you can treat the sting at home. Perhaps the most obvious way of treating the sting is by following these steps:

1)   Wash the area that has been stung with soap and water so that the venom is removed.

2)   Place a cold ice pack on the area which has been stung, as this will reduce swelling and pain.

3)   Aim to keep the wound clean and dry to stop the infection.

4)   If necessary, cover the area with a bandage.

Other remedies for mild reactions could be:

●     Hydrocortisone cream - This cream is especially useful as it tries to counteract pain and swelling. Also, relieving the swelling and itching will mitigate the pain you feel from a sting.

●     Baking soda - This can be also used to help soothe the skin.

●     Antihistamines - Using a tablet such as Benadryl can provide strong relief from swelling, whilst other tablets such as ibuprofen are also useful for easing the pain.

●     Vinegar - This is another home remedy that can be used to counteract the wasp sting. This is because the acidity of the vinegar helps to neutralise the alkalinity of the wasp sting.

Severe Reaction

If you have experienced a severe reaction to a wasp sting, then it is important that you don’t try any home remedies and you seek medical attention as soon as possible. Insect sting allergies can be very serious, so it’s important to have this addressed as soon as possible. Some of the treatments for severe reactions might include;

●     Epinephrine - This is used to relax the immune system.

●     Oxygen - This is used to help improve your breathing.
