Wasp stings are never pleasant, but for some people, they can be incredibly dangerous. Allergic reactions to wasp stings can range from mild to severe and it’s important to be aware of the warning signs. Many of us will be looking forward to the warm summer months, but unfortunately, warmer weather and increased time spent outside increases the chances of you or a loved one being stung by a wasp.

The majority of people experience mild symptoms and recover quickly after a wasp sting, but being aware of the signs of a severe allergic reaction could save someone’s life. We’ve listed the signs of an allergy to wasp stings below, from mild local reactions through to serious anaphylaxis.

Mild local reactions

The majority of people will experience a mild local reaction to a wasp sting, with symptoms including redness and a sharp pain at the sting site. You may also develop a small raised welt around the sting and a white dot where the sting punctured your skin. In mild cases, the swelling and redness should fade after a few hours.

Large local reactions

If you’re allergic to wasp stings, you may experience large local reactions, but without the life-threatening symptoms of anaphylaxis. Signs of a more severe local reaction include extreme redness and swelling that lasts for a few days after the sting. You may also experience nausea and vomiting, but over the counter antihistamines can help to reduce the symptoms.

Anaphylaxis

The most severe allergic reactions to wasp stings are known as anaphylaxis. This refers to your body going into shock after being stung and it’s vital to seek emergency assistance immediately. If you see anyone experiencing the following symptoms after being stung by a wasp, call 999 straight away:

Severe swelling of the lips, face or throat

Hives in areas of the body not affected by the sting

Difficulty breathing

Loss of consciousness

Nausea or vomiting

Weak or racing pulse
