A Bee

There’s no doubt that bees are fascinating insects. The first sight of a bumblebee is a spring season rite of passage for many. But, do you know how to distinguish between the many bee species out there in the UK?

There are actually over 250 species of bee to be found in the UK. While bumblebees tend to be the most ‘popular’ or well known, there are a number of others that you can spot quite frequently on your spring strolls.

Here are some of the most common species of bees that you’re likely to see in the UK:

Bumblebees

Let’s kick off with the most famous type of bee in the UK, the bumblebee. You can actually find 24 species of the bumblebee itself here, including tree bumblebees, red-tailed bumblebees, and white-tailed bumblebees.

They tend to nest in large colonies and are known to be a social species.

Honey bees

You can only find one type of honey bee within the UK, recognised by its black abdomen with thin golden bands. They mostly live in large hives and prefer to feed on open flowers due to their short tongues.

Mining bees

If you find a hole in your garden, it could be the work of a mining bee. They’re a solitary bee species and prefer to nest in the ground. In the UK, you can commonly find a tawny mining bee or an ashy mining bee.

Mason bees

You’re most likely to see a red mason bee in the UK. They tend to nest in wooden cavities and within brick walls, so you’re more likely to find them in more built up areas. You can recognise them by their boxy black head and orange abdomen.

Common carder bees

These are easy to spot as they’re the only all brown UK bee species. Common carder bees are easily found in all types of environment, from city gardens to rural sprawls.
