Why is a Worker Bee the Symbol of Manchester?
The worker bee has become a proud symbol of Manchester, not just in light of the city’s unbeatable spirit following the tragic attack in 2017, but as recognition to its hard-working past. Unique to the city, the worker bee has been an iconic part of its history since the 1800’s - but what does it represent?
Read on for an insightful overview of Manchester’s most famous symbol.
During the 18th and 19th century, when the industrial revolution was at the centre of this period, Manchester was one city at the heart of technological and industrial change. In particular, Manchester was renowned for its cotton production, landing itself a nickname of Cottonopolis. The textile mills that filled the city were often referred to as ‘beehives’ or ‘hives of activity’, simply due to the amount of work they tuned out each day. Since then, bees have continued to be featured across Manchester's most famous buildings, landmarks and brands, as well as appearing in muriels across the city.
In 1842, the bee was officially added to the Manchester coat of arms. Each part of this symbol holds a special meaning; the red shield with gold stripes is taken from the lords of Manchester, the ship refers to the city’s growing enterprise, the lion is a symbol of bravery and the mythical antelope represents peace, discipline and harmony. At the heart of the symbol is the globe covered in bees - a symbol of industriousness in the city.
Today, Manchester is renowned for its rich musical history, being home to and influencing some of the world's most famous bands such as Oasis, The Smiths and The Stone Roses. However, the prominence of it’s bee symbol is still as strong as ever, dotted throughout the city, from the mosaic flooring at Manchester Town hall to the clock face of the Palace Hotel. More recently, the worker bee was revived once more as a symbol of unity and strength, representing Manchester’s spirit and pride.
