Lots of people don't particularly like wasps, it's just a fact. Where bees are pretty quiet and somewhat calmer, wasps, as well as hornets, are a little more noisy and aggressive. People don’t like them because they build nests near homes and can damage shrubs and trees. Mostly, though, people are afraid of their unpleasant and painful stings.

However, they are also pretty intriguing insects and actually perform a very valuable role in the ecosystem. With this in mind, here in this blog, we explore some of our favourite most surprising facts about wasps!

Wasps build their own nests

Wasps are on a par with bees because of their incredible skill to build amazing nests, which differentiate relating to species. An example, there are wasps which make amazing structures with hexagonal cells yet the cells are painstakingly made from little little pieces of chewed up wood, these cells are enclosed in a ball.

Most wasps are not yellow and black

Lots of people think of wasps as yellow and black striped insects, however, it is estimated that around 1% of all wasps are this kind of colour. This of course varies across the world with different variations, some wasps are more of a jewel colour. Some are even more of an orange or reddish colour. Some have white colour on the legs like bees, many wasp species are black and look like tiny flies.

The smallest known insect in the world is a wasp!

frequently called the 'fairyfly' or 'fairy wasp', these are actually chalcid wasps in the Mymaridae family. There are lots of differences within this family ranging from about half a millimetre to a millimetre in length, but the smallest (Dicopomorpha echmepterygis) is less than half a millimetre long at 0.14mm, making it the littlest insect in the world.
