Hornets are a pesky nuisance that love to invade homes, build nests, sting when provoked and release venom. This is why it’s best to keep them as far away from your home as possible. But while the three pests are similar, they actually vary greatly.

Read on to find out more about the difference between the three, and who to call if you have an infestation that needs to be dealt with.

Hornets, Wasps & Bees

While many seem to lump all three together as ‘flying things that might sting you’, there are actually big differences between hornets, wasps and bees.

Bees

Bees are rounder in shape, hairy and commonly black and yellow in colour. They are usually up to an inch long and like to build nests in trees and cavities. A bee sting usually results in immediate pain and mild swelling, which can be life-threatening if you have an allergic reaction. Out of the three, you’re usually less likely to be stung, as bees are not that aggressive and will only attack if threatened. When a bee stings, its stinger detaches and it then dies, so they only sting as a matter of last resort.

Wasps

A wasp is larger than a bee, with a pinched waist and black, yellow, orange or white markings. They can be up to an inch long as well, but do not have the hair that is typical to bees. Wasps like to build nests in spots like gutters, branches and fences. Wasps are predators so will be mostly found around food and will attack if bothered, so it’s best to stay calm when one is near. They don’t lose their sting after one attack so will come after you again unlike a bee. The pain is worse than a bee sting and will last longer. Wasps are usually more solitary than the other types, often found by themselves, unlike bees and hornets who are social insects.

Hornets

A hornet is a type of wasp that is larger and more robust than wasps and bees. They are usually brown with yellow or white markings on them. They like to build nests in cavities and exposed areas, so can be found in most places. Hornets are likely to sting when they feel threatened and are likely to attack multiple times. The sting can cause serious pain that can be life-threatening if allergic or stung many times due to the venom.
